Paying It Forward: Jackie Opara

Jackie Opara provides opportunities to young women and girls through her internship programme. She teaches young women who are interested in journalism and connects them to established media organizations to kick-start their careers.

A journalist and media consultant in Nigeria, Opara is the head strategist of Jackie Opara Media, a news, media training and consultancy platform. She is a Madonna University Mass Communication graduate and has extensive training on science communication from the SARIMA postdoc breakaway workshops at the Stellenbosch Institute of Advanced Studies, Stellenbosch University.

Opara is committed to ensuring that emerging and early career researchers at universities, research institutions in Africa are able to use the vast communication tools available to advance their career. She has supported universities, research institutes and researchers across sub-Saharan Africa to ensure that they are able to make the most of the local and global funding opportunities available to further the development of university education and research as well as connect with other researchers across the globe.

Opara also writes for international news platforms and her stories have appeared on Nature News, Research Africa, South Africa and Authority Newspaper, SciDev.Net, Africa Science Gateway, Forskning & Framsteg,, Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism and the University World News.

Twenty young women have benefitted from Jackie Opara’s trainings.  She now has plans to enlarge the programme due to high demands by seeking for funding from organisations.
