Speaking Up: Ummi Bukar

Ummi Bukar’s vision for Nigerian society is one where there is both female and male gender balanced participation and empowerment.

Bukar, a gender rights activist, is the founder and Managing Director of PAGED Initiative [Participatory Communication for Gender Development], a non-governmental organisation that specialises in using media for advocacy. PAGED Initiative’s participatory research and film project, UPROOTED,  is currently being screened as an advocacy and education tool in Nigeria.

Providing a platform for direct voices is one of Bukar’s key motivations. A member of the Women’s Leadership Institute on Peace and security, she has a background in Mass Communication and a Masters in Development Communication, from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.

She has worked on several media for development projects and assisted in several films produced by MIND Nigeria. She currently serves on the board of three Nigerian NGOs.

To mark 16 Days of Activism, I am honouring 16 Remarkable Women who painstakingly work to educate on gender inequality, human rights and putting an end to violence against women and girls.
